6 Things to Know About the College of Wilmington
Are you are obsessed with creating your own skin care routines? Do you know how to create hundreds of hairstyles using just a curling iron and a few bobby pins? Do you love the latest fashions and hairstyles? Do you love helping people feel better? Have you dreamed of one day being your own boss? If so, the College of Wilmington might just be the perfect school for you.
Get Ready to Break Out of the Classroom
If you are coming straight from college or high school, you may find the learning and teaching methods of the College of Wilmington to be a bit of a shock to the system. The amount of time spent in a traditional classroom or lecture hall will be relatively short. Of course you will spend some time taking notes and learning the fundamentals in a classroom setting, but for the most part, you will be learning ‘hands on’.
You will be spending time in a teaching salon, working with talented instructors and with real clients. You will be applying makeup, cutting and styling hair, giving manicures, or giving massages to actual clients. This hands-on experience is so valuable, as there is no better way to learn, than by doing, plus you will see firsthand how a salon functions.
In Cosmetology Your Creativity Will be Tested
The learning process at the College of Wilmington is going to be difficult at times, but you are sure to relish the opportunities to explore your own creativity. You may be able to recreate beauty looks you have seen on Pinterest, but the real test will come when you’re challenged to create styles and looks of your own. With the guidance of your instructors, and the support of willing clients you can really push your creative vision. It will be this experimentation with different techniques that may lead you to your real passion. You may find that you have a love for manicures, or that you can’t beat the feeling of making your client feel beautiful with a special make up look. This can really help to guide you on your future career path.
Our Instructors are There for You
Although the program can be intense, your instructors are there for you. They were once in the same spot that you are and understand the challenges you may face. Our instructors have a love for their professions and want to help you in any way they can. Some of them might become lifelong friends in the pursuit of beauty.
You’re Going to Learn a Lot
As a licensed and accredited school, the College of Wilmington offers a variety of programs and career-specific training. Depending on the career path you choose, you can obtain licensure as a cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, a cosmetology teacher, or massage therapist. In the cosmetology program you’ll discover the science behind hair, skin, and nails. You’ll learn a variety of cutting, coloring, and hairstyling techniques. You’ll also develop skin and nail techniques such as facials, waxing, manicures, pedicures, and nail art.
In the massage therapy program you’ll receive the training you need to be a licensed massage therapist who can fulfill a range of client needs. If you plan to specialize in a particular type of massage (for instance, infant massage, stone therapy, sports massage, etc.) you will take specific courses to learn the appropriate techniques. Generally, a massage therapy program includes classes like:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Business and license procedure
- Contraindications and limitations
- Health values of massage
- Professional ethics
- Theory of massage
As you can see, your education is a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun.
